The Contemporary Music Theory Level Two book develops the chords and progressions used in contemporary pop, rock and jazz styles, with many progression examples from well-known songs. Covers five-part chords, 'II - V - I' progressions, chord substitutions, harmonic analysis of pop and jazz tunes, voice leading, 'upper structure' voicings.

Contemporary Music Theory is the product of Mark Harrison's experience teaching hundreds of students at the world-famous Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. Suitable for instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, and songwriters, this Level 3 music instruction course covers the chord tones, extensions and scale sources for all major, minor, dominant and diminished chords, and then applies .   For Adam Neely's take on Persichetti's book, see the video in post #31 titled The 5 Music Theory/Composition Books that Most Influenced Me. Neely talks about Persichetti starting at Right after, he tackles A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony and Melody by New York jazz saxophonist Dave Liebman. Neely studied with Liebman, and he's entertaining on the subject of his former teacher.

The second book by Eric Taylor, The AB Guide To Music Theory Part Two, again is a very common way to learn music theory and is a book I’ve owned for many years. Part two covers a lot more complex music harmony and structure and whilst you don’t necessarily need it for grades 1 to 5 it will be very handy for music exams beyond grade 5. An intermediate level text. The Contemporary Music Theory series by Mark Harrison is designed from the ground-up to explain the terminology and musical structures needed for modern applications.
